    Due to increased organizational awareness, consumer demand and changing regulations, leading product manufacturers, suppliers, and health care organizations are highly motivated to eliminate chemical hazards from their supply chains and identify and use safer alternatives. To this end, businesses are establishing internal chemical management policies, requiring suppliers to disclose chemicals in products, identifying chemicals of concern to human health or the environment, and selecting safer alternatives. They are purchasing: greener cleaners; medical devices without mercury, PVC, or DEHP; environmentally preferable electronics; and building and office products without chemicals of high concern to human health and the environment. Together product manufacturers, suppliers, and health care organizations are collaborating within BizNGO to advance safer chemicals through clear benchmarks. In this session, participants will learn the basics of implementing a chemicals management program and learn about BizNGO's framework for benchmarking corporate performance on safer chemicals.

    Join us as we outline the dynamic relationship between the Healthier Hospital Initiative, Cleveland's own University Hospitals (a Practice Greenhealth award winner), and The Medical Center Company (UH's district energy provider). This session will detail UH's case study of implementing the HHI Leaner Energy challenge through collaborating with internal and external stakeholders and creating a system wide energy management plan, including the establishment of a revolving energy efficiency fund. This session will focus on how to create an energy management program, including structuring a revolving fund to support energy efficiency efforts, and how data management tools such as a web-based energy metrics dashboard, USEPA's ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager, and a geographic information system (GIS) can support successful energy management in health care facilities.

Globally, livestock for meat and dairy production accounts for 18 percent of the world's greenhouse gases. In addition, approximately 80 percent of all of the antibiotics used in the U.S. are used in agriculture, primarily for meat production, which is contributing to a sharp increase in antibiotic resistant bacteria.

Globally, livestock for meat and dairy production accounts for 18 percent of the world's greenhouse gases. In addition, approximately 80 percent of all of the antibiotics used in the U.S. are used in agriculture, primarily for meat production, which is contributing to a sharp increase in antibiotic resistant bacteria. Two important strategies that are part of the Balanced Menus program for health care facilities, "Less Meat and Better Meat", can help to offset both the climate impacts of meat production and the rise of antibiotic resistant bacteria. Balanced Menus asks hospitals to reduce their meat purchases by 20 percent, well within dietary recommendations, and utilize the cost savings to purchase more sustainably-raised meats. Hear real-life Balanced Menus strategies and ideas for implementation from Barbara Hamilton at Palomar Health, and the results of the Balanced Menus Challenge evaluation project conducted in participating Maryland hospitals.

    This session by four hospital CFOs who have made significant and replicable investment in energy projects, two energy specific companies who have been involved in energy conservation on an international scale, and representatives from the U.S. Department of Energy, will review energy investment strategies, creative and timely approaches to achieving environmentally sensitive energy infrastructure alterations and a new website through which hospital CFOs and others in the sector can share successes, learn from one another, and create a forum for bringing the environmental, financial and social aspects of energy alterations to the forefront of thinking in the fiscal operations of health care facilities.
