Session Description

The Healthier Hospitals Initiative’s intent is for sector transformation where all hospitals, regardless of size or location, recognize the critical role environmental stewardship plays in achieving the triple aim as set out by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS)— better care for individuals, better health for populations and reducing per-capita costs.

Ninon Lewis of the Institute for Health Care Improvement, which originated the Triple Aim framework and has piloted its development with leading systems and communities around the world, will provide an overview of the Triple Aim. Gary Cohen, Founder and President of Health Care without Harm will connect the Healthier Hospitals Initiative’s framework with the Triple Aim – and how it can play an integral role in healthier environments for patients, staff and communities.

Presenters

Niñon Lewis, MS, Director, Triple Aim Initiatives, Institute for Healthcare Improvement
Niñon Lewis, MS, is a Director at the Institute for Healthcare Improvement. As part of her role at the Institute since 2008, Ms. Lewis has lead and facilitated IHI’s New Business Development team, building and managing IHI's business development processes, in addition to developing large-scale programs and initiatives for the organization. She currently serves as Director for IHI’s Triple Aim initiatives, as well as develops IHI’s content and programming in the area of community-wide improvement efforts. Prior to joining IHI, she managed a national initiative launched by the Office of the US Surgeon General in partnership with the American Academy of Pediatrics to identify regional and community-based solutions to the nation’s childhood obesity crisis. In addition, Ms. Lewis worked in the health communications field, developing and implementing national direct-to-patient education programs for the health care and food industries. Ms. Lewis experience includes program design and development, community coalition building and facilitation, program and brand management, grassroots organizing, and academic research in stakeholder engagement theory, health communication, community dialogue and collaboration. She is a member of the American Public Health Association and the National Communication Association.

Gary Cohen, Co-Founder & President, Health Care Without Harm and Practice Greenhealth
Gary Cohen has been a pioneer in the environmental health movement for twenty-nine years. He is Co-Founder & President of Health Care Without Harm, noharm.org, and Practice Greenhealth, practicegreenhealth.org, which are transforming the healthcare sector to be environmentally sustainable and anchor institutions to support environmental health in the communities they serve. Cohen was Executive Director of the Environmental Health Fund for many years and has helped built coalitions and networks globally to address the environmental health impacts related to toxic chemical exposure and climate change. He is also a member of the International Advisory Board of the Sambhavna Clinic in Bhopal, India, which has been working for over 25 years to heal people affected by the Bhopal gas tragedy and to fight for environmental cleanup in Bhopal. He is also on the Board of the American Sustainable Business Council and Health Leads.

In 2006, Cohen received the Skoll Award for Social Entrepreneurship. In 2007, he received the Frank Hatch Award for enlightened public service. In 2011, The New England Office of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) awarded Cohen an Environmental Merit Award in recognition of exceptional work and commitment to the environment. He was named by the Huffington Post as a Game Changer in the Healthy Living, as well as being named an Ashoka Fellow
