CM14E5-Greening the Supply Chain: GPO Sustainability Update

Session Description

What we buy matters in health care and is a key part of any sustainability journey. A hospital's mission is to protect health, and this mission applies to patients, staff and the entire community. And yet every year, the health care industry spends hundreds of billions of dollars on medical products that have significant environmental impacts. High usage of energy and water, exposure to harmful chemicals and emissions, and tons of waste and pollution created by the products used then become exposure and environmental concerns for patients, staff, and surrounding communities. Group Purchasing Organizations (GPOs) recognize this connection and are working together to offer tools and resources to support sustainable purchasing. In a panel discussion format, five of the largest GPOs will respond to questions on available resources, the role they play in environmentally preferable purchasing, the support available to health care facilities, and how suppliers can assist implementation. They will share the latest on a new effort to standardize environmental purchasing resources. For any organization working on sustainability, purchasing plays an integral part in achieving success.
