Session Description

Practice Greenhealth Partners with Feeding America to increase Health Care Food Donation with a Case Study by Beaumont Hospital - Royal Oak

Learn what the Feeding America network is and how they rely on donors like health care to address the hunger of less fortunate neighbors. Learn about the benefits of establishing a food donation program and how any hospital can begin donating unused food, demonstrate mission and community benefit through food recovery and donation to the community.

Feeding America's Tony Pupillo will share what the Feeding America network is and statistics on hunger in America versus the amount of food that is thrown away every year. You will also learn added benefits of a food donation program and how to get your donation program up and running.

Maureen Husek of Beaumont Hospital Royal Oak will demonstrate the practical aspects of starting off and maintaining a successful food donation program with partner Forgotten Harvest.

Presenters

Tony Pupillo, Director, Foodservice and Convenience Stores, Feeding America

Tony is Feeding America's Director of Foodservice and Convenience Stores. Tony started at Feeding America in November 2015. His team is working with America's foodservice industry to establish national food rescue programs and source product within Feeding America's 200 food bank/60,000 agency network. Previously, Tony worked for the National Restaurant Association for over 9 years. During his time at the NRA he worked with foodservice companies and state restaurant associations to establish ServSafe Food Safety programs and share best practices in food safety training. Tony also worked for Hyatt Hotels for 6 years and has managed an independent restaurant. Tony has a MBA and a Bachelor's degree in Hospitality Management from Roosevelt University in Chicago, IL.

Maureen Husek MA, RD | Director, Nutrition and Retail Services, Beaumont Hospital – Royal Oak

Maureen Husek is a Registered Dietitian with a Bachelor's Degree in Dietetics and a Master's Degree in Nutrition and Food Science. Maureen has 30+ years of experience in the healthcare filed, in clinical nutrition as well as food service management. She serves on both the Advisory and Outreach Committees of the Michigan Farm to Insitution Network and activity promotes the Cultivate Michigan local purchasing campaign. Maureen is the Director of Nutrition and Retail Services at Beaumont Hospital Royal Oak, a 1070 bed tertiary care facility. She is also an instructor in the Health Science College at Oakland University, currently teaching Community Nutrition.
