Data 101 Series: How to Track Food Waste Reduction

Recorded On: 11/09/2017

Session Description

"Let's feed people, not landfills. By reducing wasted food in landfills, we cut harmful methane emissions that fuel climate change, conserve our natural resources, and protect our planet for future generations,"

-- EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy.

Practice Greenhealth’s Less Food to Landfill Goal and Toolkit aligns with the Environmental Protection Agency’s Food Recovery Hierarchy.  There is an expectation for top performers to have an idea of how much food waste is headed to landfill each year (or incineration if that is the case) and work to reduce this amount, year after year.

Join Janet Howard to review the protocol for an annual 24 hour capture of food waste generated to find a way to measure progress, without the hassle of continuous measurement.

Janet will review the tools and resources available, the food waste streams and share resources to help your organization make progress in this very important intersection of population health, climate mitigation and waste minimization – and by the way – it reduces costs and has been documented to reduce the budget for food procurement!

Key participants could include Sustainability lead, Food and Nutrition Champion, Environmental Services and Population Health team.  In the 2018 Environmental Excellence Award, food waste reduction will be scored and impact the quality of the overall score.
