Session Description 

Physicians are well-poised as leaders to advocate for sustainability as an opportunity for improved health and health care delivery, yet it continues to be rare to find physicians that are actively engaged in the sustainability movement. At CleanMed 2013 we began the discussion of physician engagement, identified opportunities for physician involvement, explored ways to overcome barriers to physician participation and discussed next steps for bringing physicians to the forefront of the health care sustainability movement. In this interactive session, four engaged physicians with vast experience combining clinical practice with sustainability work will bring the conversation to the next level and continue to build on the momentum that began in 2013.

In this session we will build on last year's session and continue to explore opportunities for physician engagement and advocacy, explore and better understand barriers and discuss the necessary next steps in engaging physicians. Among other things, the focus will be on: green pharmacy and the role of the physician in reducing pharmaceutical waste; on life cycle assessment in guiding clinical decision making and the importance of physician's adding their voice to the debate of reusable vs. disposable devices along with an understanding of the science behind these decisions; and on better understanding physician attitudes/knowledge and barriers. A pre-conference survey may be employed to better understand these issues. In addition, the speakers will share an in-depth physician resource packet and lead an in-depth discussion of next steps (need for physician organization, educational materials including presentation template, need for CMEs, and opportunities for individual and collective advocacy).
